As I am a four-year undergraduate student at the University of Victoria, I have been doing a lot of research, such as reviewing and synthesizing several articles on different types of usability scales for delivering primary care or healthcare, such as delivering knowledge for prevention of harmful behaviour in a classroom setting, with the use of different types of technology. Therefore, it is undeniable that we are really in an area that we are highly dependent on technology in. I realized that throughout one of the research that I have been doing, people often highly rely on information that they have gained, like social media. Social media could be double-edged sword, as it can lead to some individuals encountering some distress. On the other hand, some individuals may find it very helpful for gaining useful information while they are navigating in their life, such as gaining knowledge on accessing mental health services through Instagram.
Social media can be one of the first and initial steps in giving individuals access to new knowledge or information, as social media nowadays delivers information that is brief, and individuals process their information based on their heuristics by having posters or reels that have been posted on social media such as Instagram or Facebook. Therefore, I strongly believe that social media are highly impactful to everyone, as social media can help ease the learning process, such as individuals creating some reels, which are 30-second to 1-minute videos, to educate people’s knowledge. For instance, knowledge of the consequences of driving after consuming alcohol.
I hope while I am in this course, I can bring skills of how I can deliver my current and existing knowledge that I have learned from the psychology knowledge as well as my earned language skills to deliver it in a more accessible and easy-to-understand way to anyone who wishes to learn it for those beginner levels who just approach this knowledge. As in the future, I am planning for educational psychology and learning science, where I hope I can teach this knowledge as well as showcase my design skills, which I have gained over the past undergraduate studies, such as designing several posters not only for psychology assignments but also student events. Therefore, combining these skills, I hope I can bring my teaching skills and my designing skills in this course with the use of social media.
Mapping the Route
I hope to achieve creating more interactive environments in a place where individuals can perceive the knowledge with ease. I think social media can be very interesting for helping the learning process. As a student, I can comprehend that students can face several stresses when this is the first time they perceive knowledge that they have never learned before. Therefore, having a social media platform can ease an individual’s stress level and reduce their level of stress, particularly for teenagers, as they are often exposed to social media such as TikTok.
As we know, AI and technology grow rapidly globally, not only in Canada but also everywhere. One of my major goals is to apply social media concepts for developing personal learning for teenagers in classroom settings, where they can perceive their knowledge easily. Because we know that from what we have learned from the news, currently there are many teenagers who have adopted new technology quickly. Therefore, we know that social media cannot be a really separate part of their life, especially for teenagers. As I adopt the learning theory that we will learn from this course, I hope to use relevant theory to support student learning experience. While I pursue educational psychology in my master’s, I hope social media can be part of the crucial role that can be considered in supporting student learning experience.
My goals connect to course objectives. I want to gain more practical knowledge on my designing skills, such as gaining knowledge on Creative Commons while extracting an image from the Google search engine, as I think visualization is also a very important component while supporting students’ learning with the use of social media. Nowadays, GenAI is also highly prevalent; therefore, while using these AI tools, we should really be cautious about how we really adapt to it for this course. Lastly, while once we understand personalized learning and the learning theory, we can apply this knowledge to practical skills, such as delivering my psychology knowledge to students at a basic level to show how they perceive new knowledge. As I mentioned earlier, social media can be a double-edged sword. I also need to recognize that social media is not really neutral for everyone and those ethical issues like invading individual privacy; therefore, learning this knowledge can reduce the rate of victims who are exposed to the bad side of social media for teenagers.
Throughout my goals and course objectives, I hope I can deliver knowledge that is simple for teenagers with the use of social media, such as using learning theory, adopting this knowledge for designing a use of a creation application, and using social media such as TikTok with these interactions of different applications.
Anticipating Turbulence
One of the challenges that I might encounter is the use of GenAI like ChatGPT, NotebookLM, and other AI tools. As different courses might have different rules and ethics, to what extent can we adopt and access the GenAI tools for this EDCI 338 course? For my solution for this course, I would adhere to the tools and the techniques, such as the prompt example that has been shown, to support my learning journey for this course.
Another challenge that I will face is my designing skills with the use of technology, as I have only created several posters, but I have never created a website, including this page. It is my first time where I am not really familiar with it. It is very confusing for me. However, while adopting these designing skills, I will continue to spend my time on following the instructions given, seek resources from Google, learn from my classmates through Teams, and if there are still some inquiries, I will email my course instructor to clarify the confusion that I might have. As designing with the use of technology is very crucial in our lives, we should adopt these skills and help for the piratical experience for the social media learning experiences.
Lastly, my challenge is AI and technology changed rapidly. Imagine during my parents’ area they had no Facebook; the only thing they could communicate with was letter mail, which took one week compared to only 1 second to deliver your message to your loved one. Therefore, AI can change very quickly. I think the only thing we need to have is to have open-minded thinking, critical thinking, and a willingness to learn new things when it comes.
Therefore, overcoming these challenges, I think I can contribute my idea to interactive learning experiences for the teenagers for their learning experience with the use of technology.
